Chapter 19

Natava rode on a new horse, granted to her. It was a white mare, much like the one Massana had used to ride. It pained her terribly that so many things reminded her of the former queen. She wondered if this ache in her heart would ever cease. Nonetheless, she focused on her task: observing the wall running along the city. Bree was with her, and the two women rode quietly alongside each other. Natava could hear the dreadful noises emanating from the other side of the wall. There was no bustling city noise to drown out the cacophony on the other side. It was a horrendous, guttural screeching sound that seemed to originate deep within their throats. However, what concerned her even more were the visible cracks in different parts of the wall. She didn’t like the sight of it.

“How long have they been here?” she questioned, gesturing to the cracks.

“A while now. But the wall still stands,” Bree replied.

“I don’t like it,” Natava sighed.

“No, none of us do. But we have no one to fix it. What’s left are simple citizens, mostly servants,” Bree informed her.

“Don’t you have a few builders?”

“We do, but according to them, there will be more cracks than they can fix,” she said.

“It would buy us more time.”

“For what? They will break inside if we don’t let them in. They are coming from everywhere, my Queen. I can’t even say if the reason we haven’t received a reply from the other kingdoms is because they simply don’t want to work with us or if they are…”

“Dead,” Natava finished.

“Yes, dead.”

“Could we be the last ones standing?”

“I fear it,” Bree told her, not even looking at her. Natava understood why the older Halo could not meet her gaze. Halos always exuded power and determination, and she knew that because of everything that had happened, even the older Halos were undeniably scared. No one believed they would have much time left in their world, not with death looming on the other side of their door.

“Maybe there is still hope,” Natava suggested. “Perhaps there are more fighters out there, and they simply can’t communicate with us about what’s happening or they are trapped in the same way.”

“Maybe, but we all know why the shadow creatures are here.”

“Why?”

“It’s where the queen is supposed to be. You’re their target, Natava. They aren’t idiots. They know someone closed the veil, but we still need someone to lead us,” Bree pointed out. “Even if you weren’t here, and even if you were dead in the ground, they know where our home is, and they know where we will be hiding.”

“The marble castle.”

“These walls are incredibly strong, and they know we will do everything to defend our home because there are children here and innocent people.”

“I do not like how right you are,” Natava chuckled nervously. “It’s all so scary. I barely knew what awaited me before Erars took me.”

“Massana was only trying to protect you,” Bree informed her. “I think she
